Music poster analysis

Stiff Little Fingers tour poster analysis

Stiff Little Fingers are a punk rock band from Belfast, formed in 1977 around the troubles in Northern Ireland. The band split up after six years and four albums, including their silver status debut album Inflammable Material, which was the first independently released album to chart in the UK, only to reform 5 years later in 1987. Still touring and recording this poster is to advertise for a recent tour of Spain.

The poster centers on the two fingers that is synonymous of the punk genre and of course which links to the name of the band. It takes the place of the bands own image but still gives a clear identity to the outfit as a punk rock band. The two fingers are also in two tone black and white which is also conventional of the punk rock genre.

The colours used on the poster, red, black and white are the colours that the group have always used on previous albums and is also part of the identity the group have created. These are some of the art and branding that SLF have used in the past including their most recent album artwork. the themes used in the tour poster are clear to see in the rest of the artwork.

Another example of the creation of an identity for the band is the use of the flame. It has been Stiff Little Fingers logo since their debut album which featured the flame on the cover (see right) as well as Anthology shown above. Its these distinctive branding features that mean that the band themselves need not feature on the poster becuase the identity is already clear. Another reason the band may have chosen to not feature on the poster is because the band are already established with fans and are seen to be towards the end of their career meaning that this is a our for the die hard fans who already know the band.

Viva La Vida Digipak Analysis

Coldplay
Viva La VidaOr Death And All Of His Friends

Coldplay released their fourth album Viva La Vida (or death and all his friends) on 11th June 2008. The album was a Huge success, both critically and commercially, winning best rock album Grammy in 2009 as well as a nomination for album of the year and being the best selling album album of 2008. However, the success didn't stop there as by 2011 the album had sold more than 10 million copies.

Viva La Vida is the Spanish for "Live The Life" or "Long Live Life." This Refers to many themes of love death and life that run throughout the album. This also links to the front cover of the digipak, which is very conventional featuring the title of the digipak and an image which gives identity with the album, which features artwork from Eugene Delecroix's 1830 "Liberty Leading The People." The historic painting depicts the french revolution of July  and a Lady leading the revolution holding a gun in her left and the French flag aloft in her right. She is the personification of freedom and liberty, leading the people over the fallen bodies. these themes of liberty and freedom are also explored in the songs of the album. The front cover doesn't contain the name or image of any of the group. This is conventional for a 'Super Band' such as Coldplay with a huge fan base to not need to create an image for new fans because that image is already heavily engraved with their brand.

The back of the album is also very conventional of a digipak with a simple song list, branding and necessary other things such as bar-code. The font and colours used for the text is formal and contains themes of royalty and wealth due to the gold colouring. This links to the front because in more modern times an archaic painting would be something owned by a higher class person and accompanied by gold in framing or decoration. The black background helps to continue the formal theme which is used because Coldplay have a very wide audience for their music and therefore need to tailor their digipak to all, and by avoiding bright colours and keeping to a more neutral theme they can appeal to all ages and genders.

The inside cover features four action shots of the band members in black and white. This is used to represent the band in an artistic style that represents their style within the genre. The right inside cover features a very similar style to the back with the plain flat black background and the gold text featuring the artist name and album name.

Kings of Leon Come Around Sundown digipak analysis

Kings of Leon
Come Around Sundown
This is Kings of leons fourth album and featured singles such as Radioactive. This album was only released in digital and digipak form and therefor no hard case CD is available. The digipak does not feature any of the artist and assumes that the audience will know who they are.
The front cover of the digipak features abstract artwork of palm tree leaves and the sun. The colours used, yellow, orange and red, continues throughout the digipak to create a chilled mood to help reflect the music of the album. The palm tree has conventions of a relaxing place, somewhere isolated and sunny. This links in with the albums single Radioactive because the music video was filmed in a similar locstion. It also helps to represent warmth with the conventions of the colours used. The ext on the front also conforms to a relaxed tone using white font.
The back features many of the usual things expected of a CD or digipak such as track list or credits, sont music. The back also features a silhouette of the band at the coast line.the band are silhouetted because it helps to create their identity without actually showing their faces, they have also done this because the band are well known enough to not need their faces for recognition.

The inside covers have three similar scenes of the beach and horizon over the sea at sunset. The scenes overall create a positive setting because the beach and sunset are both positive images and create the warm tone of the digipak. The left inner cover features a track list in white to match the rest of the font. the inside middle also features a silhouette of the band but this time they are round an open fire, This is another image which helps to create a positive, warm theme that runs throughout the digipak. The final of the three inside covers also helps to create this identity of a remote beach as it shows two palm trees standing in solidarity.

The final inside cover is very blank and  features "KOL" the initials of the band and the album name. The shortening of the band name helps to  creates an identity and a link with the fans of the band. The font used is also conventional of an informal beach style font that conforms to the whole theme of the digipak as well as the palm tree and colour scale to link to the other sides. the colours used also link with the beach theme using sand colours to create a setting.

Music Video Analysis

The killers, Shot at the night, video was directed by Roboshobo and was released September 2013. The Killers are a indie rock band from Vegas, Nevada, which will become relevant later. The band consists of four members with Brandon Flowers as the head of the group. This song was released as a single, set apart from their four award winning albums. The Killers brought their own style to the genre and quickly became one of the biggest names. The video is a performance based video featuring Brandon Flowers, alongside a narrative story about a maid working in the gambling central of the world, when she meets a boy, played by "The Social Network" and "The Internship" star Max Minghella, and they hit it off at first sight.

The video starts by fading from black to a short time lapse shot of the Vegas strip. This first two second clip instantly gives the audience the mood of the song and video, with the bright lights and cars rushing by it helps to portray the atmosphere of Vegas. The group have chosen to film it in Vegas because it is where they were born as the killers and they all see it has a home. It is also a large part of the identity of the band and this video helps to strengthen that. This establishing shot also helps to set the scene for the narrative of the video. After four beats of the song the video jump cuts to the location of an apartment or penthouse suite of a tall building looking over the strip. The focus is on the foreground with the blurred lights of Vegas in the background. This shot helps to establish the location for the performance based section of the video. after another two seconds the video cuts to a midshot of Brandon Flowers the lead singer of The killers in a similar location to the previous shot with the backdrop of the city. The next 4 seconds shows a timelapse establishing shot over the city from night to dawn and introduces the title of the video "Shot of the night". this shot sets a time for the narrative which begins in the next shot. The next few shots introduces the main character of the narrative in her job as a maid in a large casino. These shots show her cleaning mostly empty rooms and the casino floor with a glum look and a bleak outfit which greatly contrasts her surroundings. These features also help to immediately distinguish her distaste with her job,
.

In this shot we see this great contrast between her grey work overalls and the lavish surroundings of the apartment and occupants of it. With large TVs, champagne and the woman in her party dress, this hotel suite has all the check boxes ticked for a cliched expensive pent house room. This is also where the lyrics first start with "Once in a life time". These lyrics help to link to the exuberant lives of the party goers in comparison to the maid.

Two shots later the lyrics also link up with the video as it cuts to the maid in a lift carrying some towels while two casino guests show some intimacy to each other behind her. "The suffering of fools" is the line sang and this shows how she is a fool in her current job. she is also being ignored by the couple as they share the lift. this shows how little respect people have of someone with her job.

Next we see Brandon Flowers again with an over the shoulder shot looking down on the strip below him, which can relate to goodwins theory of looking. The lyrics he sings, "To find our way home," shows how the groups home is Vegas and helps to greater define their identity. The next two shots are also of the maid punching out at her job and heading home. Her home is also very plain, it is small and very colour neutral, this all helps to link in with her image as someone with no real personality or desire.

The song then begins to pick up pace before the chorus and the lyrics match up with the visuals as the visuals cut faster between the narrative and performance in order to keep up with it. the video cuts between her at home feeding her cat which is another sign of her loneliness and crave for companionship and two panning shots of Flowers.

We then see her fall onto her bed as the chorus starts and the shot cuts to the view from her bed out of her window between the curtain. This shot helps to emphasise the hours worked by the maid and to create some sympathy with the audience.

As the chorus ends and the second verse starts we see the maid driving down the strip with the reflection on her windshield. she wears the same vacant, tired expression as before. As she is driving she looks out over the bright sights of the Vegas sgtrip including grand, fake, castles and glass pyramids and as she is glaring of into the distance she snaps back into reality and is forced to slam on the breaks as she almost hits a pedestrian. It is at this point we first see any emotion from the maid as she locks eye contact with the man and they instantly both smile and have a connection, almost like the classic love at first sight cliche. The lyrics up to this point in the video are "Draw me a life line, 'cause honey I got nothing to lose, Once in a lifetime" this shadows the maids narrative as she is stuck in a dead end job with "nothing to loose". The "once in a lifetime" line also links to the idea of one destined love.

He greatly contrasts her, he has a bright blue suit on and seems happy and in a rush, overall more uplifting. This is also where the song becomes more bright again as it leads into the chorus showing that he has a positive correlation with the song. After more shots of her at her mindless job we see a long shot of her down a hotel corridor as no other than love at first sight comes out of the door. This helps to solidify the fate equation of the relationship. At this point the both stop stare and smile, the second time in the video both of which due to the male protagonist. as the chorus repeatedly plays "Give me a shot at the night"

As they drag her inside and find her clothes to wear we now first see her in colour as they apply red lip gloss, which is a reference to Goodwin's theory of looking and the sexualisation of women, and a green dress. This is a clear representation of how he has influenced her.

The next few scenes show her out in Vegas with him laughing and enjoying herself. This contrasts greatly with her at the start and is showing her "shot at the night." the lights are no longer a negative as she sits on the back of a scooter driving along the strip beneath them. All of the shots which feature her now are colorful and vivid and show the difference in perspective that Vegas offers including all the cliches such as loosing at roulette a wedding officiated by an elvis impersonator in a tiny pink chapel and the sun rising at dawn.

As the song slowly winds down she hands back his jacket after kissing him and runs of out of focus of the shot back to the casino job, however now in a much more positive mood.

Audience Research - We Are People

This is my audience research of my chosen unsigned artist We Are People using social media, Soundcloud and YouTube. We Are People, being an unsigned artist, have a very small fan base with, at the time of writing, 55 followers on twitter, but their main point of contact with fans is on their Facebook page where they have 614 likes.

Due to the nature of the band, recently started with the remains of a previous assembly, the band have a very small following consisting of fans local to the area as we can see in the Facebook analysis, which also helps to show the 25-34 age group which is most proficient throughout the fan base.
Although We Are Peoples Facebook page doesn't include a huge amount of info about the band because of what I am told from their manager and what is reflected in their music is that they are very similar to lead man Matt Linnen's previous ensemble, Vox Empire, therefore looking at their Facebook they outlined some key influences such as The Clash, Kasabian and varying to Wu Tang Clan. These influences ae clear to see when it comes to the fans of the band. Looking at the fans on various social medias such as twitter and Soundcloud I found that those who are following We Are People also are likely to be following some of these influences such as Kasbian.

First shortlist of unsigned artists

First shortlist of unsigned artists.

I have found it very difficult so far to find artists which I think would fit my ideas about my music videos, therefore this is a rough list which I will be hoping to add to later.

The first of my preferred artists are trying to keep ska on the map.
Urang Metang
I like Urang Metang because of their upbeat mood and the possibilities with narrative videos that could interlink with their songs.

The Second artist
Echoes and Halos
This group from Ipswich have a more chilled mood with lyrics that could easily match a narrative video.

My third potential artist
Vox Empire
Vox Empire are a group from Southend that create Indie Rock and Roll. Similar to  Echoes and Halos Vox Empire would feature well in a narrative video.

My final shortlisted artist
Moon Party
Moon party are a chilled rock pop group from Scotland

Music video analysis

I have chosen to analyze the music video for the Gnarls Barkley song Going On. The video was directed by Wendy Morgan and was shot in Jamaica.

The Genre of this track has been highly disputed but it is agreed that it is a variant of pop and electronic. The music is very upbeat and along with the backing vocals the song portrays a very vibrant mood. The video is of a Jamaican village dancing in a way to match the tone of the video.

The video matches up with the lyrics frequently throughout the video and the lyrics are often illustrated on screen such as "cause and effect" and are also often subtly acted out, for example "one foot in front of the other." This helps to link the lyrics with the video without becoming cliched. The song also matches up with the visuals in other ways. The song often cuts at the end of four beats in order to match up with song. It also cuts more frequently with faster paced parts and less so in the slower paced pieces of the song.

This video differs to the norm of Gnarls Barkley because instead of featuring the two in a performance based video it is a narrative based video which does not relate to the artists slightly. Instead of the two artists the video features the Jamaican village. The record label have used this in order to help to portray the happy and enjoyable feeling which Gnarls Barkley produces.

The only inter textual reference I could pick out was at 1:18 the video shows three men and three girls dancing in a head to head style which is very iconic of films and other music videos in a dance-off style.

Overall this video of narrative based style is very different to many others because it contains people and settings unfamiliar to the conventions of both Gnarls Barkley and the genre therefore it doesn't compare to many others.
